Sydelle Noel on the Cold Plunges, Protective Styles and the Self-Care Rituals Behind Her ‘Reacher’ Transformation

Prime Video’s Reacher has spent three seasons proving that Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher can out-punch, out-run and out-think anyone in his path, all while shattering streaming records while he does it. Season 4, premiering August 12 and rolling out weekly through September, hands him a match worth watching: Sydelle Noel as Tamara Green, a detective pulled into Reacher’s orbit after a subway bombing sets off the season’s central conspiracy.

It’s the latest entry in a career built on physically commanding, genre-defying roles. Noel, a former college athlete, has become one of Hollywood’s go-to action performers through Netflix’s Emmy- and SAG-nominated GLOW and the Oscar-nominated Black Panther, and Reacher pushed her further than either—into extensive firearms training (done left-handed), stunt choreography and near-constant running. Ahead, the star talks about the recovery rituals, protective styling and self-care philosophy that got her through a six-day-a-week shoot.

Matt Kallish

Reacher’s stunt and training schedule sounds intense. What does your routine look like when you’re shooting six days a week?

“For skin care, I always start my morning with an ice-water face plunge, especially when you have a 5 a.m. call time! I love using natural ingredients on my skin, like fresh aloe straight from the plant, sea moss, flaxseed gel and I use Jamaican castor oil as a serum. It’s literally a natural Botox for the face.

I also do cold plunges regularly and made sure I incorporated them into my routine, which was a must with all the training and stunts we were doing. I balanced that with hot yoga, acupuncture, cupping and weekly massages to help my body recover and keep me feeling my best.”

How do you keep your hair and skin protected through wigs, sweat and quick on-set changes during an action shoot?

“Great question. As a Black woman, hair is always something you have to think about on set. Before I booked the role, I knew I wanted to make sure my hair was protected, so I asked if we could keep it in a protective style. We ended up doing twists and keeping my hair in a ponytail, which worked perfectly for the five months we were shooting.

I would have it re-braided about once a month to keep it fresh, and it really helped protect my hair from sweat, stunts and the long days on set. For my skin, I’m also a big believer in keeping things simple and natural. Trason, my makeup artist on set, helped me with that, and we kept Tamara’s makeup very natural while I continued my same skin-care routine at home.”

Matt Kallish

You went from college athletics to Hollywood. How has your relationship with your body and beauty changed across that transition?

“I think my relationship with my body has evolved since getting older. As a collegiate athlete, I was very focused on what my body could do as far as speed, strength, endurance and performance. It was very much about pushing myself above and beyond and being the best athlete I could be.

Coming into Hollywood, especially doing action work, I still have that mindset, but I’ve learned to appreciate my body differently. I’m not just focused on how it looks; I’m much more conscious of how I take care of my body, how I recover and how I feel. Beauty for me has really become more about feeling confident, being healthy and being comfortable in my own skin.”

Tamara Green is a detective going toe-to-toe with Reacher’s world. What kind of physical prep did this role demand that your past projects—GLOW, Black Panther—didn’t?

“GLOW, Black Panther and Reacher all required very different kinds of physical preparation. With GLOW, it was a controlled environment, so my training was more focused on strength and wrestling because I was playing a wrestler. With Black Panther, I was focused on becoming a Dora Milaje warrior, so there was a lot of weapons training with a bo staff. But Reacher really pushed me differently because Tamara is a detective who has to be able to keep up with Reacher’s world.

For this role, I incorporated a lot more running because, as you’ll see, I’m running in pretty much every episode! I also had extensive firearms training. I’m left-handed, so I had to learn how to shoot, reload and handle everything with my left hand, including a shotgun. And then there was the stunt and fight training—I was working with stunt performers and learning choreography, and I think this was probably the first time I really trained this extensively for stunts and fight sequences.

So physically, Reacher demanded a combination of speed, endurance, strength, weapons training and fight skills. It was definitely challenging, but it was also the most fun I’ve had on a set.”

Matt Kallish

Action heroines are often styled to look effortlessly tough. How much of that toughness is makeup and wardrobe, and how much is just you walking on set?

“Honestly, I think it’s a combination of all of it. A lot of that toughness comes from me walking onto set prepared, knowing my lines, being mentally focused and knowing that physically I’m ready for whatever the day requires, whether that’s fighting, running or handling a firearm.

But I have to give so much credit to our hair, makeup and wardrobe teams because they really helped bring Tamara to life. When you look good, you feel good, and when they put me in that wardrobe and finished the look, it immediately changed the way I carried myself. They helped me find that confidence and allowed me to step onto set and become Tamara. So, yes, there’s definitely a lot of me in that toughness. But the magic really happens when all of those elements come together.”

You’ve built a career playing women who break the ‘strong vs. feminine’ binary. What’s a beauty or self-care moment that makes you feel most like yourself, off camera?

“For me, it’s when I can take off all the armor, literally and figuratively. After playing these strong, physical women, there’s something nice about getting home, taking a long hot shower, doing my skin care, putting on comfortable PJs and just being still.

I also love taking care of my body because I’m so addicted to the physical—it’s a must to get massages, do my yoga, be in nature or even just have a quiet morning with myself. I’m so on the go that it’s important to me to ground myself whenever I can. Those moments remind me that femininity and strength can exist together.”
