NARS Orgasm’s Origin Story Is Surprisingly G-Rated

Most hero products start with a color, but NARS Orgasm Blush ($36) was an anomaly that began with a word.

When NARS founder François Nars was naming his original blush collection in the late ’90s, he wasn’t starting from pigment, or even a particular product. “He wanted the blush names to evoke emotions and feelings,” explains Jennifer Jackson, deputy general manager of the brand’s global marketing. “Because when you blush naturally, it comes from an emotion.”

To that end, he kept a running list of names pulled from pleasure and passion, and Orgasm was one entry among many. As the story goes, “the name actually came long before the color,” Jackson shares. “The peach-pink powder with the fine gold shimmer running through it was formulated afterward, to earn a name that had already been chosen.” Almost 30 years and multiple reformulations later, that sequence is still the detail NARS points to when asked why this particular blush, out of an entire prestige-beauty catalog, is the one that never left.

The staying power shows up in the numbers. Orgasm is the top-selling shade across five NARS product lines, and Jackson says one unit sells somewhere in the world every 20 seconds. The pattern holds with every launch: “Whenever we launch a new product lineup with Orgasm in it, from our iconic powder blush to our new liquid blushes and everything in between, the Orgasm family is always at the top of our best-sellers.” What started as a single powder blush is now a full cross-category franchise spanning cheek, eye and lip, with four Orgasm blushes and four liquid versions between matte and shimmer finishes. Each is a different attempt to let a new formula “express the color well,” as Jackson puts it, without diluting what makes the original recognizable.

Niko Lopez, NARS’s director of U.S. artistry, has spent years applying the shade across a range of skin tones and watching it behave differently on each. “Orgasm succeeds because it’s perfectly balanced between peach and pink, spun with a subtle golden shimmer,” Lopez says. “On fairer complexions, you’ll notice more of the soft pink freshness. On medium skin tones, the peach warmth becomes more apparent, creating that healthy, lit-from-within flush. On deeper complexions, the golden shimmer catches the light beautifully, adding dimension and radiance.”

The “universally flattering” label attached to Orgasm since it launched isn’t quite accurate in Lopez’s opinion. “It’s less that one shade suits everyone and more that the shade shifts identity depending on who’s wearing it,” he says—a harder thing to formulate for, and a big reason he thinks it’s held up.

What no formula can explain is the name itself, which has been doing solid (and sometimes blush-worthy, for lack of a better word) marketing work for more than two decades. Lopez also spent years watching husbands sent to the counter to restock their wives’ makeup scan a wall of shade names, stall out and eventually ask, usually in a whisper, whether NARS makes “a blush called…Orgasm.” Some assume their wives are pranking them; the name feels too improbable to be real packaging copy. “The combination of being in a beauty environment they weren’t familiar with and having to say the word out loud made for some wonderfully awkward moments,” Lopez laughs.

His personal favorite, though, came mid-segment on live television, when he told a morning-show host that “a little Orgasm” will do it. “Years of saying the name every day meant I didn’t even register what I had said,” Lopez recalls. “The host froze completely before finally laughing and saying, ‘For the first time in my career, I’m speechless on live television.’ This was in Connecticut nonetheless!”

Now, that same word is starting a second life. NARS launched in New York in 1994, and the brand is marking National Orgasm Day on Friday, July 31 with its first-ever consumer pop-up there: a life-size, immersive 3D installation built around the blush and the wider franchise it spawned. Expect product trial, giveaways and social-first moments designed for an audience that was barely walking when the original launched. Gen Z has been finding Orgasm on its own terms lately, most visibly through creator Ella Bright of Off Campus, who recently named it her favorite blush. Jackson doesn’t see that as a rebrand so much as a second entry point. “We story tell around the original color, but we also make sure Orgasm shows up in a lot of our innovation.”

One of the strongest stories, Lopez says, is watching the product move down through families: mothers buying it for daughters before prom, those daughters buying it for themselves years later and, now, grandmothers sending grandchildren back to the counter to restock their Multiple in Orgasm ($40).

He calls three generations converging on one product “a beauty rite of passage,” and it’s why NARS’s team is candid that longevity like this isn’t engineered. “I don’t know if you ever set out to make a legacy product,” Jackson says. “When you have something that’s extremely creative, high quality and people genuinely love it, that’s the magic mix that stands the test of time. François didn’t set out to create a legacy product. He set out to create something great, and it stood the test of time.”
