Can You Work Out After Botox? Here’s What Experts Say

So you just got Botox—yay! If you’re someone always planning your next move, you might be wondering: how soon can you hit the gym? Candidly, it’s a surprisingly unsettled question—and one that’s coming up more often (not something I’m making up; it’s backed by data: neurotoxins—like Xeomin, Botox Cosmetic or Dysport—and hyaluronic acid fillers together made up 80 percent of all minimally invasive procedures last year, per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons). As treatments become more routine and casual, basic aftercare questions like this one can get lost in the shuffle.

For answers, I spoke with two board-certified dermatologists about the most pressing questions people have about working out after getting neurotoxin injections, including the elusive “how long should I wait” number, whether sweat actually makes it wear off faster and which workouts pose the biggest risk.

Featured Experts

  • Doris Day, MD is a board-certified dermatologist in New York
  • Daniel Schlessinger, MD is a board-certified dermatologist in Omaha, NE

The Short Answer: Give It a Few Hours

The simple, straightforward answer is to wait a beat. “We generally recommend waiting about six to eight hours after Botox before exercising,” says Omaha, NE dermatologist Daniel Schlessinger, MD. The reasoning, he explains, is that “there is a chance that the Botox could ‘spread’ beyond where it is injected when bending forward and moving around too much.”

There’s another reason to hold off, too: bruising. “After treatment, strenuous exercise and excessive heat exposure should be avoided for the rest of the day,” Miami dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD told NewBeauty for a neurotoxin safety story in our spring 2026 issue. “Increased blood flow can worsen swelling or bruising and may slightly affect how the product settles,” she added.

Does Sweat Make It Wear Off Faster?

Keeping with the short-answer theme (you’re welcome): probably not. “There isn’t much data, but the data that there is does not point to it wearing off faster,” says New York dermatologist Doris Day, MD. That tracks with the broader consensus: sweat is a surface-level phenomenon, while neurotoxins sit inside muscle tissue, so there’s no real mechanism for the two to interact.

What’s more possible, says Dr. Schlessinger, is something more indirect: “It is plausible that increased blood flow could bring more swelling to an area and possibly spread Botox beyond its desired target”—though on the forehead specifically, “Botox is injected into muscles, not into blood vessels or at the superficial level of sweat glands, so it would not be affected by sweating.”

The real risk, dermatologists agree, isn’t the sweat—it’s the wiping. Rubbing your face mid-workout applies pressure that’s far more likely to shift the product than perspiration ever would.

That doesn’t mean exercise is entirely off the hook, though. One small 2023 study found that women who were generally more active saw their results fade faster over 90 days than those who exercised less, though researchers still aren’t sure why, and it is just one small study. Still, it raises a fair question: If it’s not the sweat, could it be the workouts themselves?

Are Some Workouts Riskier Than Others?

Experts say the type of workout matters less than the specific movements involved. Dr. Schlessinger says “the riskiest ones are anything that involves bending forward or increasing swelling to the head.” (Think downward dog, headstands and forward folds.)

Hot yoga is often singled out as the worst offender, stacking heat, inversions and heavy sweating (which leads to face-wiping) all at once. Heavy lifting and high-intensity cardio carry similar risks, less because of the movement itself and more because of what comes with it: breath-holding, straining, blood pressure spikes and more sweat to wipe away. The safer bets are upright, low-impact activities like walking, easy cycling and standing yoga poses—nothing that flips you upside down or gets your heart racing.

All that said, rules like these are exactly why it pays to just ask your own trusted provider, as they might wave you through sooner than you’d expect, or the opposite. (Mine, for the record, told me I was cleared to run the same day, if I wanted to.) At the end of the day, your provider’s word beats any list on the internet—but if you’re the “better safe than sorry” type, there’s zero harm in holding off a little longer, anyway.
