Does My Neck Really Need Its Own Skin-Care Routine?

The neck is one of the first areas to show visible signs of aging—and one of the easiest to leave out of a skin-care routine. Between horizontal lines often dubbed “tech neck,” sun damage, crepiness and loss of elasticity, the thinner skin below the chin can benefit from a little extra attention. The good news: Dermatologists say that usually doesn’t require an entirely separate lineup of products.

Ahead, two dermatologists explain what makes neck skin different, when to start caring for it and which products and treatments are worth considering.

Featured Experts

  • Dr. Deborah Longwill is a board-certified dermatologist in Miami
  • Sue Ellen Cox, MD is a board-certified dermatologist in Chapel Hill, NC

Do You Need a Neck Skin-Care Routine?

“Absolutely. The neck is one of the first areas to show signs of aging because the skin is thinner, has fewer oil glands and is constantly exposed to the sun,” says Miami dermatologist Dr. Deborah Longwill. Chapel Hill, NC dermatologist Sue Ellen Cox, MD agrees that giving the area some attention is worthwhile. Neither expert, however, believes it necessarily requires a separate set of products from those you use on your face.

You Can Use Your Face Products on Your Neck

“We live in an era of overconsumption where more is often seen as better, but for most people, simply extending your facial skin care down onto your neck and chest is all you need,” says Dr. Cox. Dr. Longwill agrees, noting that one of the biggest mistakes she sees is stopping products at the jawline.

There is one caveat: Neck skin is thinner and more delicate than facial skin. “I recommend introducing active ingredients like retinoids gradually,” says Dr. Cox.

Neck-specific formulas are also an option, particularly if the area is a primary concern. “Dedicated neck creams are available, and many are excellent,” says Dr. Cox, who often recommends them when the neck is a primary concern or a patient is undergoing in-office treatments.

When to Start Using Skin Care on Your Neck

“Prevention is always easier than correction, so I encourage patients to start caring for the neck in their mid-20s by making sunscreen and moisturization part of their daily routine,” says Dr. Longwill. Dr. Cox agrees that your 20s are a smart time to begin, particularly as frequent phone use can make horizontal neck lines more noticeable.

The Must-Have Steps in a Neck Skin-Care Routine

“Sun protection is by far the most important step because the neck receives significant UV exposure but is often overlooked. A daily broad-spectrum sunscreen should be non-negotiable,” says Dr. Cox. Dr. Longwill agrees that consistency with sun protection makes the biggest difference over time.

Beyond SPF, the essentials are fairly simple. “Cleanse, apply an antioxidant such as vitamin C in the morning, moisturize and use a retinoid in the evening if your skin tolerates it,” says Dr. Longwill. Those looking to build out their routine can also consider growth factors, peptides and DNA repair enzymes, which Dr. Longwill says may “help support collagen production and improve skin quality.”

For more advanced signs of aging, in-office treatments may offer more significant improvement. Dr. Longwill points to microneedling, laser resurfacing and biostimulatory injectables as options to discuss with a qualified provider.

The Best Skin-Care Products for Your Neck

“The best product depends on what you’re trying to address, whether that’s sun damage, fine lines or loss of firmness,” says Dr. Cox. With your primary concern in mind, consider adding one of these targeted formulas to your routine.

For patients looking for additional support beyond their standard skin-care routine, Dr. Cox often recommends Defenage PRO 6-Week Perfection Neck Cream. The formula is also a favorite among several of our dermatologist experts for its ability to help strengthen delicate neck skin.

This retinol-and-peptide formula is designed to address both early and advanced signs of neck aging, including horizontal neck lines, crepiness and uneven tone. The lightweight, gel-like texture also makes it easy to work into a nightly routine. Use it on its own or alongside dermatologist-recommended in-office treatments.

SkinCeuticals Tripeptide Neck Repair

Created by dermatologist Dr. Muneeb Shah, this recently launched treatment uses encapsulated retinaldehyde, a retinoid that converts more efficiently in the skin than traditional retinol. The twist-up stick glides directly over the face, neck and chest, helping minimize drips and product waste while making it easy to incorporate into a nightly routine.

Dr. Cox also recommends this neck-specific formula for those looking to improve firmness and elasticity. She notes that it is designed for the delicate skin of the neck and is backed by clinical data showing improvements in texture and crepiness.

Nécessaire takes a minimalist, peptide-focused approach with this formula. Its concentrated blend of five peptides is designed to support the skin’s natural collagen production and improve the look of firmness. According to the brand’s four-week consumer study, 92 percent of participants said their neck felt firmer, while 88 percent noticed an improvement in the appearance of neck lines.

Nécessaire The Neck Serum

The cooling rollerball applicator is what sets this serum apart, offering a quick, mess-free way to massage the formula into the skin. The brand also reports clinical improvements in the appearance of horizontal neck lines, sagging and uneven texture with twice-daily use.

U Beauty brings its signature SIREN Capsule Technology to the neck and chest with this concentrated treatment. It creates an immediate blurring effect while helping improve the look of elasticity and uneven tone with continued use.

U Beauty The SCULPT Neck + Décolleté Concentrate

Developed with input from dermatologists and plastic surgeons, this clear, glide-on stick combines RoC’s signature retinol with antioxidants and firming THPE. The brand says it delivers an immediate tightening effect while helping improve firmness over time. Designed for the face, neck, chest and backs of the hands, it offers an easy, budget-friendly way to incorporate retinol and firming ingredients into your routine.

RoC Derm Correxion Firming Serum Stick

A longtime dermatologist favorite, this lightweight lotion features Alastin’s patented TriHex Technology, which is designed to support the removal of damaged collagen and elastin while encouraging the production of new fibers. Suitable for daily use across skin types, it is also commonly recommended as an at-home complement to neck-tightening procedures.

Alastin Restorative Neck Complex

Drawing on Neocutis’ wound-healing research, this cream is formulated to resurface, hydrate and brighten the neck and chest. The formula supports collagen types I, III and VII, as well as elastin production, making it a strong option for addressing crepiness and uneven tone. Because it contains glycolic acid, it is best used at night and paired with diligent sun protection during the day.

Dr. Longwill applies this stem cell serum to both her face and neck as part of her daily regimen. It “helps support collagen production and improves overall skin quality,” she says.
