The Best Ways to Sharpen Your Jawline, According to Experts

A sharper jawline isn’t about chasing one trending tweak. Experts say it’s about understanding why the lower face looks softer in the first place. Bone structure, skin thickness, submental fat and early laxity all blur the jawline in different ways, and each may require a different approach.

“The starting point is always anatomy,” says Wayne, NJ facial plastic surgeon Jeffrey B. Wise, MD. “You have to evaluate the bony mandible, chin projection, fat beneath the jaw and whether there’s platysmal laxity. Those factors dictate what will actually create definition and what won’t.”

Ahead, facial experts break down the smartest ways to refine the jawline, from subtle, short-term fixes to major changes that totally transform the lower face.

Featured Experts

  • Jeffrey B. Wise, MD is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Wayne, NJ
  • Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in New York
  • Kautilya Shaurya, MD is a board-certified dermatologist in New York
  • Brian Hibler, MD is a board-certified dermatologist in New York

Short-Term Depuffing for a Quick Boost

If your jawline looks sharper some days than others, fluid retention—not anatomy—may be the culprit. “Gua sha can temporarily reduce fluid retention and soft-tissue swelling, which may create the appearance of a sharper jawline for a few hours,” says New York facial plastic surgeon Konstantin Vasyukevich, MD. “But it does not change structure or tissue quality.”

Experts are clear that this category is cosmetic, not corrective. Gua sha can help before an event or after travel, but it won’t tighten skin or rebuild definition.

Jawline Filler When Structure Is Needed

Filler can improve jawline definition when it’s used to support structure, not create tightness. “For patients with thin skin, minimal fat and good skin quality who lack definition, filler can be very effective,” says Dr. Vasyukevich. “But it has to be used selectively. Filler cannot tighten skin or replace lifting.”

Dr. Wise says he typically uses thicker, more durable hyaluronic acid fillers when addressing the jawline. “I’ll often reach for something like Juvéderm Voluma because it provides structural support,” he explains. “But filler alone is rarely the full solution.”

The most common mistake he sees is overfilling. “Trying to use filler to create tightness often backfires,” Dr. Wise says. “It can make the jawline look heavier and less defined, not sharper.”

When to Use Energy-Based Tightening

When the jawline looks blurred but hasn’t truly dropped, energy-based tightening treatments can help sharpen contours. “These devices are ideal for patients with good underlying bone structure who are starting to see softness from mild fat or early laxity,” says Dr. Vasyukevich.

In his practice, Dr. Wise commonly uses radiofrequency devices, such as Morpheus8 and XERF, as well as ultrasound-based technologies, including Ultherapy PRIME. “These treatments stimulate collagen and improve skin firmness,” he says. “They can enhance jawline definition when laxity is mild and surgery isn’t indicated.” This category works best for patients seeking gradual, noticeable refinement rather than dramatic change.

When a Layered Approach Is Best

Experts agree that jawline definition improves most when treatments are planned, not picked in isolation. “When it comes to aesthetics, combining treatments is the way to go,” says New York dermatologist Kautilya Shaurya, MD. “Injectables, lasers and radio-frequency devices each target different layers of the skin. When you treat structure, skin quality and laxity together, results are more natural.”

Dr. Wise echoes this approach. “I frequently combine filler with energy-based devices,” he says. “That way, you’re supporting the jawline structurally while also improving skin tightness and contour.”

A Detail That Can Subtly Sculpt

Jawline definition isn’t just about the front of the face.“One area I’m treating more often is the posterior angle of the jaw,” says New York dermatologist Brian Hibler, MD. “Enhancing that back angle creates better shadowing and definition, especially in profile.” It’s a subtle adjustment, he says, but one that can dramatically improve how the jawline reads on camera and from multiple angles.

Who Neck Lipo Is (and Isn’t) For

If excess fat under the chin is the primary issue and the skin still has good elasticity, neck liposuction can be an effective solution. “Neck liposuction works best when fat is the main problem and the skin can retract,” says Dr. Vasyukevich. But when skin and muscle laxity are the real culprits, nonsurgical options fall short.

When Surgery Makes More Sense

The biggest mistake experts say they see patients make is trying to force a nonsurgical fix when anatomy calls for something more. “The most common mistake is using filler to try to create tightness,” says Dr. Vasyukevich. “It doesn’t work and often makes the jawline look heavier.”

Dr. Wise agrees. “Patients want a noninvasive solution, but sometimes the safest and most tasteful way to achieve their goal is surgical correction.”

“When jawline definition is lost due to true skin and muscle sagging of the lower face and neck, particularly involving the platysma, a surgical lower facelift and necklift becomes the most effective and natural-looking option,” says Dr. Vasyukevich.

Dr. Wise adds that patients with moderate to severe laxity are often better served by surgery. “In those cases, we commonly perform deep plane facelifts and deep necklifts,” he says. “They can dramatically improve jawline definition with relatively minimal downtime when done appropriately.”
