The Best Blush Sticks for Mature Skin Start at Just $5

When it comes to mature or aging skin, makeup artists almost universally reach for cream and liquid blushes over powder. They “give the skin a dewy flush and a subtle, lit-from-within glow,” celebrity makeup artist Kat Guevara previously told NewBeauty. It’s why blush sticks, in particular, have become some of the best tools in a mature skin makeup kit.

That’s not to say powder blushes are inherently bad, but on mature skin, they’re not always the most skin-friendly option. As skin ages, it produces less oil and loses elasticity, which means powder formulas have a tendency to settle into fine lines, sit on top of dry patches and emphasize texture rather than blur it.

Cream and liquid formulas, on the other hand, melt into skin and move with it, making them a more forgiving option. And one of the most user-friendly ways to wear them? Blush sticks. They’re versatile (many can be used on the lips and eyelids too), easy to blend with just your fingers and perfect to throw in any bag for a quick pop of color on the go.

We’re not the only ones who love a blush stick; lately, it seems like every brand has created its own version, and some are better than others when it comes to aging skin. We’ve rounded up the best blush sticks for mature skin ahead—but first, a little more about the ingredients to look for, how to best apply them and more details to note.

Ingredients to Look For in Blush Sticks for Mature Skin

A hydrating formula is non-negotiable for a blush stick on mature skin. It helps prevent the product from settling into fine lines and wrinkles, but there are other ingredients worth seeking out, as well. New York celebrity makeup artist Katherine Dorn of IRN Beauty recommends looking for nourishing emollients such as castor oil, shea butter and jojoba seed oil, which help the formula glide on smoothly and keep skin feeling comfortable, as well as skin-plumping hyaluronic acid and antioxidant-rich vitamin E.

As for what to avoid, Dorn recommends skipping blush sticks with shimmer or sparkles, which may accentuate lines.

How to Apply a Blush Stick for Mature Skin

Using a blush stick is much like using any other cream blush product. Since it’s in stick form, you can swipe it directly onto your cheeks before blending, or, as Dorn recommends, apply it with your fingers or a makeup brush. “If using a brush, you can add a very little bit and use a stamping motion to blend,” she says, emphasizing the importance of starting with just a little product—”you can always add more.”

If you prefer using your fingers, start by applying the blush directly to your fingers rather than your face. “I apply a little bit to my fingers to warm up the product and use the same motion, tapping the color into the top of the cheekbones up into the temples,” she says.

In general, it’s ideal to create a lifting effect with your blush. To do so, Dorn likes to apply it “at the top of the cheekbones and blend in an upward motion,” she says. “This will lift the face and avoid adding too much to the apples of the cheeks.”

Blush sticks aren’t just for your cheeks, either. “You can also use a cream blush on your eyes and lips as well,” says Dorn, though always check that your specific formula is safe for use around the eyes and lips before doing so.

Though it’s not technically a stick, Merit’s Flush Balm earns its place here. The cylindrical pot applies with one swipe of a finger, and the formula’s microfine pigments deposit a sheer, transparent wash of color that lets your skin show through rather than cover it up. It’s one of the most natural-looking options on this list and comes in a dozen shades.
