GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Zepbound may have another benefit beyond weight loss. As reported by Scientific American, research presented at this year’s American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting linked the medications to lower rates of certain cancers, slower disease progression and improved survival.
Why Researchers Are Paying Attention
What’s making these findings especially intriguing is that they may not be explained by weight loss alone. While obesity is a known risk factor for at least 13 types of cancer, scientists are investigating whether GLP-1 drugs themselves could influence how tumors develop and spread through their anti-inflammatory effects and the receptors they activate throughout the body.
What the Research Found
According to the report, one study found that women taking GLP-1 medications were about 30 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Other studies linked the drugs to lower risks of breast cancer recurrence and death, improved survival among patients with colorectal cancer and significantly lower rates of progression to stage IV disease in breast, lung, colorectal and liver cancers.
Earlier Research Points in the Same Direction
Scientific American also highlighted previous animal research suggesting that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound, may inhibit tumor growth. Those findings have not been replicated in humans, but they add to a growing body of evidence suggesting these medications may have effects that extend beyond metabolic health.
Researchers caution that the evidence is still early and observational, so while the studies show an association, they do not prove that GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer. Still, the findings are encouraging and have researchers taking a closer look at whether these drugs could one day play a role in lowering cancer risk. For now, though, experts say more clinical research is needed.
