The Ingredient Your White Blood Cells Already Make—and Your Skin Wants More Of

Every so often, a skin-care ingredient becomes impossible to ignore, and right now, it’s hypochlorous acid. Dermatologists have relied on HOCl for years for its ability to calm irritation and help reduce bacteria while supporting the skin barrier. Now, elegantly formulated facial mists are bringing it into everyday skin care in a much bigger way.

Maybe you’ve seen it on TikTok as a post-workout skin refresh or heard dermatologists recommending it after procedures and during breakouts. Either way, experts agree: hypochlorous acid may be one of the most versatile additions you can make to your routine.

Ahead, dermatologists break down what hypochlorous acid is, why it works and why one formula in particular—Skincare Junkie’s Barrier Boost Face & Body Mist—is standing out in an increasingly crowded category.

Featured experts

  • Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skincare Junkie in New York
  • Marisa Garshick, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in New York
  • Mara Weinstein, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in New York

What exactly is hypochlorous acid?

The ingredient, also known as HOCl, isn’t exactly new to your body. “Hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring molecule produced by our white blood cells as part of the body’s immune response,” explains New York dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD. “It is both antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, so it helps calm redness while remaining gentle enough even for sensitive skin.”

Who should be using hypochlorous acid for skin concerns like acne and redness?

According to dermatologists, almost everyone can benefit from incorporating HOCI into their routine. “Hypochlorous acid can be considered for patients dealing with acne, rosacea, eczema, barrier disruption or post-procedure skin, as it can help soothe irritation,” says Dr. Garshick. “It’s also especially helpful for individuals prone to breakouts related to sweat, such as after workouts.”

Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose says it has become one of the most versatile products in her practice. “In my office, patients use hypochlorous acid after workouts, during travel, after laser procedures, during acne flares or anytime skin feels irritated, overheated or inflamed,” she explains. “It’s one of those rare ingredients that supports the skin barrier while still helping skin to be cleaner, calmer and more balanced.”

She says patients especially love it for facial and body breakouts, particularly in areas prone to sweat and friction.

“The continuous mist makes it incredibly easy to spray hard-to-reach areas like the back, shoulders and chest, which is one reason why so many of my acne-prone patients swear by it,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. “People are much more consistent with body care when the application feels fast, effortless and refreshing.”

Why hypochlorous acid works best as a mist

There’s a reason most dermatologists prefer hypochlorous acid in mist form. “A mist format allows for an even, lightweight application without the need for rubbing, which is ideal for irritated or sensitive skin,” Dr. Garshick says. “It’s easy to apply after cleansing, before serums or moisturizers, throughout the day or post-workout.”

“There’s also the universal appeal factor,” adds New York dermatologist Mara Weinstein, MD. “Mists are approachable for everyone, men and women alike. People don’t hesitate to spray one on after the gym, at the beach or throughout the workday.”

She points to Skincare Junkie’s Barrier Boost Face & Body Mist Hypochlorous Acid Solution Spray as a standout option. “A lot of hypochlorous acid sprays can feel overly clinical or utilitarian,” Dr. Weinstein says. “Barrier Boost feels much more elevated from both a formulation and user-experience standpoint, which makes people more likely to use it consistently.”

Why formulation and packaging matter

Hypochlorous acid is notoriously unstable, meaning it can degrade when exposed to light and air, losing efficacy before it ever reaches your skin. Dermatologists say that formulation and packaging are especially important when choosing an HOCI product. “When looking for a hypochlorous acid product, concentration and stability matter,” says Dr. Garshick. “I like that Skincare Junkie’s Barrier Boost was specifically engineered with packaging designed to help maintain the integrity of the formula while remaining gentle enough for sensitive and post-procedure skin.”

Dr. Murphy-Rose says preserving the formula’s performance was one of the primary goals during development.

“We were meticulous about ensuring the formula and delivery system work together to preserve stability and efficacy through the last use,” she explains. “The custom bottle helps protect the integrity of the hypochlorous acid while delivering a fine, continuous 360-degree mist that can be used comfortably on both the face and body, including hard-to-reach areas like the back.”

The experience itself was equally important. “Many hypochlorous acid sprays on the market feel medicinal or harsh,” Dr. Murphy-Rose says. “I wanted Barrier Boost to feel elegant, refreshing and enjoyable enough that patients would actually reach for it throughout the day.” That sensorial experience, she notes, is part of what drives real results.

“Patients keep one in their gym bag, one in their bathroom, one in their carry-on,” she says. “Because Barrier Boost feels so effortless and pleasant to use, they use it consistently and consistency is where you really see the benefits.” Think of it as a dermatologist-developed reset button for stressed, sweaty, reactive or post-procedure skin. Once reserved mostly for wound care and clinical settings, hypochlorous acid has officially entered the elevated skin-care conversation—and formulas like Skincare Junkie’s Barrier Boost Mist are helping lead the shift.
