At a point in life when many people are slowing down, June Squibb is doing anything but. The beloved actress, whose career spans decades across stage and screen, is currently balancing her Broadway performance in Marjorie Prime with buzzy film work, including Eleanor the Great<\/em>, a powerful project now streaming on Netflix.<\/p>\n For Squibb, the film was special from the moment it landed in her hands.<\/p>\n \u201cI loved the script when I first got it,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was a joy to shoot.\u201d Set and filmed entirely in New York City\u2014a place Squibb called home for 65 years before moving to Los Angeles\u2014the experience felt like a homecoming. \u201cIt\u2019s always good to be back in New York. I enjoy it. We shot everything right here, and we were very well taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n The project also marked her first time working with the film\u2019s director, the one-and-only Scarlett Johansson, a collaboration that quickly turned into something more meaningful. \u201cWe really hit it off,\u201d Squibb says. \u201cWe liked each other so much, and we\u2019ve maintained our relationship, which you don\u2019t always do after a film.\u201d<\/p>\n Surrounded by a cast that included Erin Kellyman, Jessica Hecht and Rita Zohar, Squibb describes the set as one of those rare experiences where everything clicks. \u201cIt was just a really great cast,\u201d she says. \u201cThose don\u2019t come along every day.\u201d<\/p>\n When she\u2019s not on screen, Squibb is back where she began: the stage. Returning to Broadway in a lead role was a deliberate choice\u2014and one she\u2019s deeply grateful she made.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s fun, but it\u2019s tiring,\u201d she admits with a laugh. \u201cIt\u2019s much more tiring than filming. You don\u2019t do anything maybe all morning, but then when you\u2019re there, you\u2019re constantly working. You don\u2019t get any time off at all.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, the fatigue is outweighed by the joy. \u201cI loved working on stage my whole life, and I hadn\u2019t been doing it recently,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s just been wonderful. I\u2019ve enjoyed being with a cast and seeing them every day. It\u2019s very positive. I feel very positive about doing the show.\u201d<\/p>\n So how does she sustain the energy required for eight shows a week\u2014especially during a notoriously frigid New York winter?<\/p>\n \u201cI rest,\u201d she says, without hesitation. During rehearsals, she found herself sleeping as much as 12 hours a night. \u201cI just had to have a lot of rest.\u201d<\/p>\n Now settled into the rhythm of performances, she averages around nine hours of sleep and listens closely to what her body needs. \u201cI think you get your body used to it, and it just gets easier, but I do try to go to bed by 9 every night.\u201d<\/p>\n Evenings are intentionally low-key. After a show, Squibb keeps things simple: a cup of tea, a few pretzels or Japanese mochi ice cream\u2014\u201clittle things like that.\u201d To wind down, she reads or works on crossword puzzles or Sudoku, which she considers calming rituals. \u201cNothing too stimulating,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n When it comes to beauty, Squibb\u2019s approach is practical, as well as modern. One product she gives all the rave reviews to: Selena Gomez\u2019s Rare Beauty foundation.<\/p>\n \u201cI hate a heavy base,\u201d she says. \u201cAs I\u2019ve gotten older, it\u2019s just not good. A heavy base is not good.\u201d Introduced to it by a makeup artist during her stage work, the lightweight foundation quickly became a staple. \u201cIt really answers my problem,\u201d she explains. \u201cI use it when I go out on my own, and I use it every night on stage. It is really a great product.\u201d<\/p>\n Her philosophy is simple: makeup should enhance, not mask. \u201cI really stand by that one,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n After a career defined by longevity and range, Squibb\u2019s advice to her younger self, and to anyone starting out\u2014is both honest and hard-won.<\/p>\n \u201cBe yourself,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s hard to do. But you have to learn that who you are is enough\u2014in life and in acting.
