Born and raised in New York, Hayden Panettiere has spent more than 25 years in front of the camera. As she steps into 2026, however, she\u2019s busier, more intentional and more creatively fulfilled than ever. \u201cI have my work cut out for me this year, but I\u2019m very excited,\u201d the 36-year-old says of her already packed schedule. \u201cThey say an idle mind is the devil\u2019s playground, so we keep on keeping on.\u201d<\/p>\n

That momentum is fueled in part by Sleepwalker<\/em>, the psychological thriller from Appian Way and Verdi Productions, out January 9 in theaters and streaming platforms, which Panettiere both toplines and produces. The film marks a bold new chapter for the actress, who first captured audiences as Claire Bennet on Heroes<\/em>, earned two Golden Globe nominations for Nashville<\/em> and recently returned to the Scream<\/em> franchise. But it also reflects a deeper evolution\u2014one that extends beyond acting.<\/p>\n

Alongside her film work, Panettiere has been immersed in writing a memoir for the past year and a half. \u201cI can\u2019t say too much about it just now, but I will say it\u2019s been an incredibly cathartic and therapeutic experience,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that is easy about sharing your stories with the entire world to judge, but I really hope that this book will inspire people and hopefully make people feel less alone in their own struggles. That\u2019s my ultimate wish.\u201d<\/p>\n

The process itself was a learning curve. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely not something I was used to,\u201d she admits. \u201cI had help from a trained team of people who were amazing sources of information and guided me through the process.\u201d Putting her life on the page meant wrestling with structure. \u201cIt was interesting trying to put my life in chronological order and tell my stories from beginning to end. The memories of my life don\u2019t always flow very well.\u201d Eventually, something clicked: \u201cBut when the stories started flowing, they just came one after another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having started acting at just four years old, Panettiere has long been skilled at navigating emotional intensity\u2014and stepping away from it. \u201cGrowing up, we had to go to school on set as well,\u201d she explains. \u201cYou get 20 minutes in between a scene where maybe somebody passed away or something intense happened, and then you\u2019re rolling right into 20 minutes of algebra.\u201d That early training stuck. \u201cPracticing getting your mind in and out of that\u2026it\u2019s something that I\u2019ve actually always been really good at.\u201d Still, she notes, \u201cAs I\u2019ve gotten older, I also find myself investing more and more into my job and going deeper with the characters that I play, which can definitely suck you in.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she needs to quiet her mind, Panettiere turns to reading. \u201cUsually, when I want to get out of my mind, I enjoy and have found it really helpful to focus on one thing,\u201d she says. \u201cI love fantasy and sci-fi. It takes me out of our world and lets me exist and create another in my mind. It focuses me. It\u2019s like meditation for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sense of intention extends into her beauty routine. \u201cI\u2019m a huge Oribe fan,\u201d she says, also naming Glow Recipe and Moon Juice among her favorites. \u201cAs I\u2019ve gotten older, I\u2019ve also become much more preoccupied with inner health.\u201d And some staples are forever. \u201cYears later, I still use Neutrogena wipes religiously! What can I say, they are really good.\u201d<\/p>\n

All of that self-awareness feeds into Sleepwalker<\/em>, a dark, emotionally layered project that pushed Panettiere creatively and personally. \u201cIt\u2019s a psychological thriller that is about this mother who loses her daughter in a tragic car accident,\u201d she explains. \u201cThroughout the film, we watch her descend into darkness as she battles between what is reality and what\u2019s this nightmare world.\u201d Filmed in just 15 days, the experience was transformative. \u201cNot just getting to act, but getting to be on the production side\u2014that was really exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Working alongside an ensemble cast and first-time live-action director Brandon Auman, Panettiere felt deeply connected to the project. \u201cIt was a great project to be involved with, inspiring and really fun,\u201d she says. With Sleepwalker<\/em> arriving this January, Panettiere is working from a place of clarity\u2014choosing projects that feel intentional, challenging and fully hers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
