Southlake, TX dermatologist Janine Hopkins, MD, agrees that there’s “so much focus on a youthful face and body, but hands are often overlooked and can give away signs of aging quickly if not cared for.”

To help address aging hands, we asked experts to share their best tips and treatments. Dr. Hopkins notes that, as with other areas, combinations of therapies often deliver the best results. “Experts often layer treatments to achieve natural, balanced rejuvenation. A customized approach—tailored to each patient’s skin type, degree of aging and lifestyle—is key to optimal outcomes,” Drs. Alster and Hartman say.

Ahead, explore expert-recommended options for achieving more youthful-looking hands before booking a consultation.

Featured Experts

How to Prevent Signs of Aging on the Hands

Before getting into cosmetic ways to turn back the clock on your hands, it’s worth addressing prevention. Experts agree that daily sun protection and antioxidants are foundational for keeping hands looking younger. “Chronic ultraviolet exposure is the primary driver of skin aging, including the hands. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher should be applied daily and reapplied throughout the day, especially when outdoors or driving,” Drs. Alster and Hartman say.

Everyday habits also play a role. “Protect your hands from chemicals by wearing gloves when using cleaning agents and wash hands with gentle cleansers, not harsh hand soaps, full of fragrance,” Dr. Hopkins recommends. She even wears sun-guard gloves while driving to help protect her skin—a testament to how seriously dermatologists take daily sun exposure.

At-Home Skin Care for Aging Hands

Your skin-care routine shouldn’t stop at the doctor’s office. Both Tucson, AZ plastic surgeon Raman C. Mahabir, MD, and Dr. Hopkins agree that many of the best products for hand rejuvenation are the same ones used on the face. “The same anti-aging topicals used on the face, neck and chest should be incorporated into hand-care routines,” Drs. Alster and Hartman say. To build a more intensive regimen, Dr. Mahabir recommends high-quality hand creams focused on hydration, as well as LED light therapy.

“The hands are also particularly prone to dryness, which can accentuate signs of aging. Regular skin hydration with application of rich, emollient creams is essential,” note Drs. Alster and Hartman. “Overnight hand masks or thick creams or ointments sealed in with white cotton gloves can provide intensive moisture and improve overall skin quality.”

Antioxidants can support both prevention and rejuvenation, Dr. Mahabir adds. “Vitamin C can brighten pigmentation while defending against environmental damage,” Drs. Alster and Hartman say. While they also recommend retinoids at night to stimulate collagen and improve the appearance of fine lines and crepiness, Dr. Mahabir cautions that these formulas can be irritating since the skin on the hands is relatively thin. Proceed with caution or speak with your provider about how to incorporate them safely.

The Best In-Office Treatments for Aging Hands

Lasers

“In-office treatments play an important role in preventing and reversing more advanced signs of hand aging. Laser and light-based therapies are highly effective for treating brown spots, uneven tone and fine lines,” Drs. Alster and Hartman say.

“IPL is the go-to for brown spots and hand rejuvenation,” says Dr. Mahabir, noting that it’s safe and effective, albeit a little spicy. When there’s already visible damage, such as brown spots or crepey skin, Dr. Hopkins also turns to IPL treatments. “IPL and other broadband light treatments target pigmentation, while fractional lasers improve both discoloration and texture by stimulating collagen remodeling,” explains Drs. Alster and Hartman.

Dr. Hopkins sometimes employs the Fotona laser, using a three-step approach to boost collagen and refine the epidermal layer. “This is done over the dorsal hands, as well as on the fingers, which can also look crinkled and crepey over time.” She also likes to combine fractional laser resurfacing with topical PRP applied using CuraCator. “This is very similar to the technique I use to treat the face and even the upper and lower eyelids,” she says.

Drs. Alster and Hartman caution that “more aggressive ablative laser resurfacing should be approached with caution on the hands, as there is a higher risk of scarring and dyspigmentation compared to the face.”

Fillers

“One of my favorite procedures to perform in my practice is injections to help restore volume to the thin skin that looks veiny and aged,” says Dr. Hopkins. Drs. Alster and Hartman often opt for biostimulatory fillers, “as they provide immediate volume restoration while stimulating long-term collagen and elastin production, leading to improved skin quality over time.”

Dr. Hopkins points to Radiesse as a strong option, noting that it can be injected using a microcannula to minimize trauma and bruising. “I personally do this for my hands every 18 months,” says Dr. Hopkins. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also be “effective for restoring lost volume, helping to soften the appearance of prominent veins and tendons,” Drs. Alster and Hartman note.

Fat Grafting

When volume loss is more pronounced, Dr. Mahabir prefers fat grafting as a longer-term option to rejuvenate the hands. “Fat grafting in conjunction with other surgical treatments is often a nice adjustment,” says Dr. Mahabir. It’s especially useful when fat grafting is already being performed elsewhere, such as the face or breasts, since the patient’s own fat is already being harvested and prepared.

[55
