But some ingredients deserve to be retired, or at least reconsidered, as we get older. Skin can grow more sensitive over time, and products that once held a permanent spot in our routine may suddenly start causing irritation or other issues.

“As skin ages, it undergoes significant transformations driven by hormonal shifts and a decrease in metabolic rate,” explains New York dermatologist Julie Russak, MD. “These factors lead to slower skin cell turnover, reduced collagen production and a decline in natural oil production. Additionally, the decline in estrogen levels during menopause contributes to increased dryness, loss of skin elasticity and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. With these changes in mind, it’s crucial to be aware of ingredients that may be too harsh for mature skin.”

Chapel Hill, NC dermatologist Sue Ellen Cox, MD, notes that there’s nothing that people with mature skin universally need to avoid, as everyone’s skin is different. She recommends focusing less on “having a long, complicated regimen and more on choosing a few well-supported active ingredients that target your specific concerns.”

Ahead, dermatologists break down eight ingredients and product types to reconsider as your skin matures, plus gentler swaps to try instead.

What is mature skin?

“Mature skin generally refers to skin showing signs of aging, often becoming more noticeable in the 40s and beyond,” says Miami dermatologist Dr. Deborah Longwill. “As collagen, elastin and natural oil production decline, we see more dryness, fine lines, loss of firmness and uneven tone.” Dr. Cox says that with mature skin, “the focus has shifted from prevention to correction—addressing changes such as wrinkles, pigmentation, volume loss and changes in skin texture.”

Fragrance

Anyone with sensitive skin knows that fragrance is a no-go, and this becomes true for more people as skin becomes more sensitive with age, explains Houston, TX dermatologist Jennifer Segal, MD. Dr. Russak warns that fragrances “can trigger inflammation, redness and allergic reactions, exacerbating age-related skin issues like dryness and sensitivity.”

What to try instead: Fragrance-free options include La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer ($26), SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum ($295) or Alastin Restorative Skin Complex ($258).

Sulfates

Sulfates are highly contested in general, and the experts say it’s best to stay away as we age. “Common in many foaming cleansers, sulfates (like sodium lauryl sulfate) can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation,” says Dr. Russak.

What to try instead: Opt for gentle, sulfate-free cleansers like fresh Soy Hydrating Face Cleanser ($39), TULA The Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser ($34) or Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water ($12).

Harsh scrubs and exfoliants

“Scrubs can irritate the skin, causing dryness and dullness rather than the ‘glow’ we seek from exfoliating,” warns Dr. Segal. “Scrubs with large or rough particles can cause microtears in the skin, leading to irritation and further weakening the skin’s barrier,” adds Dr. Russak. “Mature skin is thinner and more fragile, so it’s better to opt for gentle exfoliation.”

What to try instead: Gentle exfoliators formulated for sensitive skin, like Oak Essentials Renew Face Polish ($58), Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant Face Exfoliator ($69) or Tatcha The Rice Polish: Gentle ($69).

Preservatives

Santa Monica, CA dermatologist Ava Shamban, MD, notes that preservatives can be an issue for mature skin, resulting in irritation, redness and itching. Dr. Longwill says she’d be “most cautious with methylisothiazolinone, as it has a higher risk of causing allergic contact dermatitis, particularly in sensitive skin.”

Not all preservatives need to be avoided. For example, Dr. Longwill doesn’t “routinely recommend avoiding parabens, as they generally have a low rate of sensitization.” Dr. Cox adds, “Many effective skin-care products require preservatives to remain shelf-stable, particularly when they contain higher concentrations of active ingredients.” She recommends working with your dermatologist to determine what is appropriate for your skin.

What to try instead: Avène has a preservative-free line, including Tolérance Control Soothing Skin Recovery Cream ($40). Options include MARA Flower Acid Algae Resurfacing Serum ($74), EADEM Cashmere Peel Milky Exfoliant & Hydrating Essence ($42) or Allies of Skin Mandelic Advanced Pigmentation Corrector Night Serum ($105).

Harsh toners

Harsh toners can strip the skin of moisture, says Dr. Segal. When it comes to mature skin, toners “can cause irritation and dryness as well as dullness,” she adds.

What to try instead: Opt for gentler options like hydrating essences or rosewater mist.
