Now she’s entering into an exciting new professional chapter with her new cookbook, “The Secret Sauce” ($36), an expansion on the approachable, family-friendly recipes that have become a signature of her brand. Here, in her own words, she opens up about how her relationship with beauty and authenticity has evolved, and how cooking may just be her best secret for self-care.

“When I was younger, I connected beauty to always needing to look and present perfectly. I still love fashion; I still love getting dolled up. But somewhere along the way, my definition of beauty changed. Real beauty, to me now, is more grounded in how you carry yourself, how you treat people and whether you’re actually taking care of yourself.

I don’t think I understood that shift until my body forced me to. I’ve lived with migraines for years, and for a long time I managed them quietly, on my own, with over-the-counter medication and a kind of resigned attitude. I can’t tell you how many times I told myself, ‘This is just how life is.’ I was powering through because I didn’t want to miss the special moments with my husband and our kids. Then, there was a charity event that changed everything. I had a terrible attack right before we were supposed to leave. Eric [Decker, her husband] looked at me and said, ‘Babe, we’re not going tonight.’ That was the moment I stopped fighting it alone.

When I finally talked to my doctor honestly about how all of it was affecting my life and my relationships, it was a relief just to have a name for what I’d been living with. We built a management plan together, and I went from three or four attacks a month to real control. That taught me something I didn’t expect: Trusting your instincts isn’t selfish. It’s actually the most loving thing you can do for the people around you…when you take care of yourself, you show up better in every other part of life.

That’s true of my music, too. Authenticity is about honesty—asking myself whether a song is true to what I’m actually experiencing right now. My sound has matured because my life has. I’m not the person I was 10 years ago, and I’m not interested in pretending to be. I’m a wife, a mom and a business owner trying to find balance in the middle of all of it. When a song is honest about where I am, that’s what my fans connect with—the real, messy, honest parts, not the polished version.

My self-care routine now is really about prevention. I’m religious about rest and drinking water. I’ve learned to take stress seriously because it’s one of my biggest triggers. And communication with Eric has been everything. He’s learned to recognize when an attack is coming, and he helps me create the space I need to recover. That partnership is part of my care plan as much as any prescription.

That same honesty is what’s carrying me into my next chapter. Somewhere between the music, the fashion and the family videos I post from our kitchen, cooking became its own kind of self-care and a way to gather everyone I love around one table. This October, I’m publishing my next cookbook with HarperCollins, called The Secret Sauce. It builds on the same Southern-inspired recipes I’ve always cooked for my family—the ones that started as Instagram videos and turned into something people actually made at home. It feels like the most natural extension of everything else I do…just another way of taking care of the people I love, and hopefully making someone else’s kitchen feel a little less overwhelming, too.

If I could tell other women one thing, it’s this: You cannot pour from an empty cup. Self-care isn’t optional, it’s essential. Rest, hydrate, move your body. Have the hard conversations with your doctor. Give yourself grace. You won’t balance everything perfectly, and some nights you’ll need to skip the event instead of pushing through.

I used to think beauty was about showing up perfectly. Now, I know it’s about showing up honestly. That’s the only version of myself I’m interested in anymore, whether I’m on stage, in the kitchen or just getting through a Tuesday.”

[55
