Most eczema treatments are built to fight one thing at a time, either the visible flare-ups or the itch that comes with them. A new injectable antibody is designed to go after both simultaneously, and early trial data suggest that the dual approach might pay off.<\/p>\n
As reported by Dermatology Times<\/em>, researchers shared preliminary phase 1 trial results for BBT001, an antibody designed to block two inflammatory pathways involved in eczema at once. Patients treated with the drug saw significant skin clearing within just one week, and itch relief starting as early as the day after their first dose.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n By week six, patients on BBT001 saw dramatic improvement in skin clearing compared with placebo. Itch relief was even more striking. It remained noticeable for up to eight weeks after patients\u2019 last dose, well beyond the treatment period itself.<\/p>\n New York dermatologist Michael Cameron, MD, a lead investigator on the study, said the results stood out. \u201cThe speed, depth and consistency of clinical improvement observed with BBT001 exceeded my expectations, particularly given the short treatment duration and severity of disease among the participants,\u201d Dr. Cameron said. \u201cI am grateful to our patients and proud that our site contributed to the advancement of a potential novel therapy that, if approved, could reshape the treatment landscape for AD.\u201d<\/p>\n Portland, OR dermatologist Eric Simpson, MD, pointed to another advantage: the drug\u2019s long half-life may eventually allow for dosing as infrequently as once every three months, putting it in line with other pipeline treatments aiming to cut down on frequent injections. \u201cDespite important advances in AD treatment, patients and physicians are still looking for therapies that provide more complete control of both skin lesions and itch without the burden of frequent dosing,\u201d Simpson said.<\/p>\n The treatment was reported to be well tolerated, with no cases of eye irritation, a side effect sometimes seen with other eczema biologics.<\/p>\n This is still a small, early-stage study, just 17 patients, so larger trials will be needed to confirm these results.
