There are certain words that seem to take over aesthetics overnight, and right now, \u201cregenerative\u201d is one of them. PRP and PRF have been part of the conversation for years, but now we\u2019re hearing the term attached to exosomes, polynucleotides, biostimulatory injectables and other treatments designed to work with the body\u2019s own repair processes.<\/p>\n
According to NewBeauty\u2019s State of Aesthetics Summer 2026 report, interest is already high, even if familiarity isn\u2019t. Only 37 percent of respondents say they\u2019re somewhat or very familiar with regenerative aesthetic treatments, yet 71.2 percent would consider PRP injections. More than half, 50.6 percent, would consider exosome treatments and 42.2 percent are interested in PRF.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The appeal makes sense when you look at what patients say they want. Preventing future aging was the most important aesthetic goal for 72.6 percent of respondents, followed by improving skin quality at 64.8 percent, tightening skin at 58.4 percent and maintaining facial volume at 56.4 percent. Those priorities fit naturally with the regenerative conversation. Patients still want to soften lines, restore lost volume and tighten lax skin, but they\u2019re also thinking about collagen, skin quality and what they can do now to maintain what they have.<\/p>\n
Newton Centre, MA plastic surgeon Joseph Russo, MD, sees regenerative aesthetics as part of a larger convergence between aesthetics and longevity. \u201cWe\u2019re using a patient\u2019s own biology, things like growth factors and biostimulatory treatments, to keep collagen going, maintain muscle mass and help people look like the best version of themselves for longer, instead of overfilling or overoperating.\u201d<\/p>\n
The interest is already showing up in doctors\u2019 offices. Shreveport, LA dermatologist Skylar Souyoul, MD, says more patients are beginning preventive treatments at younger ages and asking for natural-looking results. Derby, CT dermatologist Mwatsveruka Munhutu, MD has noticed the same shift. \u201cPatients are increasingly asking for PRP, biostimulators and treatments that harness their own biology, even if they don\u2019t necessarily call them \u2018regenerative.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
That last point may help explain the gap between familiarity and interest. Patients may not recognize regenerative aesthetics as a category, but they understand the promise behind it: treatments designed to preserve what they have and work with their own biology rather than simply correct what they see. Half of respondents, 50.6 percent, also say they prefer subtle treatments that maintain a natural appearance. Only 7.2 percent want to age without aesthetic treatments at all.<\/p>\n
PRP has a considerable head start. It has been used for years for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration, so it makes sense that it leads the survey at 71.2 percent.<\/p>\n
The bigger surprise may be exosomes. Despite the low familiarity with regenerative aesthetics overall, more than half of respondents would consider an exosome treatment. PRF followed at 42.2 percent, with biostimulatory fillers at 38.5 percent and fat transfer at 37.8 percent. Even polynucleotides, or PDRN, which are newer to the U.S. beauty conversation, drew interest from more than a quarter of respondents.<\/p>\n
New York dermatologist Erin Kil, MD, credits social media with making patients more familiar with these individual procedures. The treatments may be reaching patients one at a time, long before they understand how, or whether, each one fits beneath the regenerative umbrella.<\/p>\n
This is where the numbers get especially interesting. Interest is running well ahead of understanding, something West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Jacob Beer, MD, sees in his own practice. Patients will often ask for exosomes, polynucleotides or other treatments by name, he says, or simply ask for an alternative to more traditional options like HA filler. \u201cMost of my patients don\u2019t necessarily use the term \u2018regenerative,\u2019 but the term certainly resonates with them once it\u2019s used,\u201d says Dr. Beer.<\/p>\n
That distinction matters because regenerative treatments can range from options with decades of research behind them to newer treatments for which the science is still developing. Dr. Beer points to PRP, PRF and certain biostimulators as better-studied examples, compared with newer treatments such as PDRN and exosomes. Akron, OH dermatologist James Libecco, MD sees a similar issue. While some treatments have \u201csubstantial evidence of short- and long-term benefit,\u201d he says, others being promoted have little evidence supporting their efficacy and safety. Understanding the differences between exosomes, growth factors and stem-cell-derived technologies is becoming increasingly important as more products and procedures enter the conversation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe terminology is moving faster than the science,\u201d says Dr. Souyoul. Dr. Munhutu agrees that regenerative aesthetics is here to stay, but says \u201cthe science has to keep pace with the hype.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is critical that we present the best of options to our patients for their long-term benefits, not just whatever word has the fastest TikTok buzz and leads to visits and product sales,\u201d Dr. Libecco says. \u201cScience should trump buzz.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
