New research suggests women managing type 2 diabetes may be having a harder time with “the change.” As reported by Contemporary OB/GYN, a study published in the journal Menopause found that women with type 2 diabetes reported both a higher number of menopause symptoms and greater symptom severity than women without it. The gap was clearest after menopause.

What the Study Found

According to The Menopause Society, the hormonal shifts of the menopause transition raise a woman’s risk of chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes. Weight gain and fat redistribution to the midsection increase visceral fat, which raises that risk further. Researchers have long suspected the relationship runs both ways, but most previous work focused on when menopause happened rather than how it felt.

Researchers looked at nearly 300 women ages 40 to 64 in South Korea, classifying participants as diabetic or nondiabetic based on fasting glucose and HbA1c levels, and using a tool called the Midlife Women’s Symptom Index to measure symptoms across every stage of menopause. Women with diabetes or prediabetes reported more symptoms at every stage, and severity followed the same pattern. In both cases the difference reached statistical significance only among postmenopausal women.

Why It Matters

“This study demonstrates that women with diabetes may experience a greater burden of menopause symptoms,” said Stephanie Faubion, MD, medical director for The Menopause Society. “Prior research has also shown that cardiovascular risk factors, including diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, are associated with more frequent vasomotor symptoms, and women with a higher vasomotor symptom burden tend to have a less favorable cardiometabolic risk profile.”

Dr. Faubion says the findings reinforce the need to recognize and treat menopause symptoms in women with diabetes, but there’s a bigger takeaway, too. The menopause transition can be an important window for identifying cardiovascular risk factors in all women. As researchers continue to uncover the connections between hormonal and metabolic health, the study suggests menopause symptoms may offer important clues about what’s happening beyond the hot flashes.

[55
