As Amazon expands the Legally Blonde <\/em>universe into the television prequel Elle,<\/em> the series is finally answering a question the films never asked: Who raised her?<\/p>\n Enter June Diane Raphael as Eva Woods, Elle\u2019s mother, a role that reframes everything audiences thought they understood about Elle\u2019s ambition, wit and emotional intelligence. It\u2019s a performance that\u2019s sharp, grounded and unmistakably June\u2014funny in the ways you\u2019d expect from the actress behind Grace and Frankie <\/em>and Black Monday,<\/em> but layered with something more intimate. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n The role arrives at a fitting moment in Raphael\u2019s career. Most confident, unapologetic women\u2014like the Elle we meet in Legally Blonde<\/em>\u2014don\u2019t just arrive that way. Our mothers have such a profound impact on how we see ourselves, and Eva is teaching Elle so much about life, but she is also learning so much from her daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cEva understands that Elle is destined for big things! She has an undying belief in her daughter\u2019s abilities even when Elle doubts herself.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOur culture is still so deeply misogynistic, and Elle Woods reminds so many young girls that they can be as feminine as they want to be\u2014love pink, fashion and makeup\u2014and still be smart and powerful. We need that message more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t approach Eva any differently than any other characters I\u2019ve played. I always try to find what is truthful and personal to me. Sometimes, that is funny, and sometimes it\u2019s not, but it\u2019s fundamentally the same approach every time.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI love getting older because I have so much more to say and offer in my work. I am finding more opportunities to share more of myself, which I\u2019m so grateful for. And the nice thing about getting older is that you can risk more of yourself creatively because you aren\u2019t as scared as you were in your 20s.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI was raised by an incredible mother who adored me as much as Eva adores Elle.
