The nail category isn\u2019t typically known for rapid innovation, but that\u2019s starting to change. Case in point: CND\u2019s latest launch, a visible light nail lamp that cures gel polish without relying on traditional UV technology.<\/p>\n

Instead of UV or LED light, this new system uses visible light to cure the brand\u2019s Shellac gel polishes. According to CND, the technology delivers the same adhesion, durability and long-lasting wear\u2014without emitting UV radiation. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So how does it actually work? \u201cThe CND Visible Light Lamp uses diodes that emit light entirely within the visible spectrum (above 400 nm), producing no UV output,\u201d explains CND Global Education Manager and salon owner Lynn Cote. \u201cWhile many other nail lamps operate with wavelengths below 400 nm, which fall into the UV range, traditional nail lamps typically use UV light to cure.\u201d<\/p>\n

That distinction matters. According to Harvard Health Publishing, both UV and LED nail lamps emit UVA radiation, which is associated with an increased risk of skin cancer. While the risk from nail lamps is considered low, experts still recommend protective measures like applying sunscreen to the hands or wearing fingerless gloves during gel manicures.<\/p>\n

Beyond the safety conversation, the new technology is also designed to improve performance. \u201cThe lamp improves curing performance, especially for highly pigmented or opaque shades, by enhancing depth of cure and reducing issues like wrinkling,\u201d says Cote. When paired with the Shellac system, the result is \u201cup to 21-day wear, a fade-resistant finish and no nail damage,\u201d she adds. The lamp also includes a preset \u2018IR\u2019 button featuring red light technology\u2014not to cure polish, but to create a more \u201cspa-like experience\u201d during the service, Cote explains.<\/p>\n

In terms of usability, the experience remains familiar. The system cures polish in layers much like traditional lamps, but features updated hardware like a cordless, rechargeable design, an ergonomic shape and a removable baseplate for pedicures. The goal, CND says, is to introduce new technology without requiring nail professionals to change the way they work.<\/p>\n

Alongside the new lamp, there are also new CND Shellac colors to play with. As the brand relaunches its Shellac line of gel nail polishes, it is introducing six retro-inspired shades and 10 pro-favorite colors. Altogether, the new system includes well over 100 shades, two base coats and four top coats.<\/p>\n

The new CND Shellac system and visible light lamp will be available nationwide as a salon service starting July 1.<\/p>\n
