From the moment Padma Lakshmi stepped onto the set of\u00a0America\u2019s Culinary Cup<\/em>, it was clear this wasn\u2019t just another cooking competition, but the most fully realized version of her vision yet.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the 55-year-old host, author, model and food expert returned to television with a concept that raises the stakes visually and creatively: 16 of the nation\u2019s top chefs competing for a record-breaking $1 million prize, all under her watchful eye and alongside culinary heavyweights Michael Cimarusti and Wylie Dufresne.<\/p>\n

Beyond the prestige and the pressure, the show reflects something more personal: Lakshmi\u2019s own evolution\u2014a shift that began with the decision to return on her own terms. \u201cI think it was two years ago when I decided I was going to create another show in the same genre,\u201d she says. \u201cI thought I was done, and then Amy Reisenbach, who\u2019s the head of CBS, seduced me into saying \u2018yes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That moment became a turning point, opening the door to something few in television are offered in the form of full creative authorship. \u201cShe made a really good pitch and said, \u2018What would it look like if you could call the shots and you could create it from the ground up?\u2019\u201d At a time when opportunities in television are shrinking, or \u201ccontracting\u201d as she puts it, the moment felt especially timely. \u201cHere\u2019s the biggest network on the planet wanting to work with me! I shouldn\u2019t take that for granted, obviously.\u201d<\/p>\n

That level of control shows up in every detail. \u201cI went there when they were constructing it with a hard hat, and that\u2019s when the magnitude of what we were building really hit home,\u201d Lakshmi recalls. \u201cBefore that, it was computer models and floor plans.\u201d<\/p>\n

The finished set reflects that same approach\u2014pared back and highly considered. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have a lot of things on the walls. It\u2019s not very colorful. It\u2019s almost Spartan in how utilitarian it is,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s very luxurious in the equipment and the ingredients that we fill it with, but there\u2019s this very stark color palette of white marble, stainless steel and light wood floors. It\u2019s very simple, and I wanted it that way on purpose because I didn\u2019t want anything to distract the chefs from their task at hand.\u201d Still, the space isn\u2019t without softness. \u201cI wanted something that was not rectilinear, something that had a curved, more feminine shape to it. It\u2019s like an amphitheater, and that\u2019s also something that\u2019s very conducive to better focus and more creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Filming in Canada required a level of immersion that Lakshmi welcomed, especially at this stage in her life. \u201cMy daughter [Krishna] is older now, and she\u2019s quite independent, so that was a blessing,\u201d she says. \u201cI was able to be there and stay fully focused.\u201d The pace was intense, but energizing. \u201cI didn\u2019t have a lot of time to ruminate because I was so busy either being on-camera or being off-camera. After a whole day\u2019s worth of filming, I would come home and prepare for the next day. It was the kind of schedule and work where the days actually flew by for me, which I like. I was so immersed in what I was doing, which is really a wonderful feeling to be that engaged by one\u2019s work that you don\u2019t even notice time passing. That\u2019s a real privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n

Off set, that same sense of intention carries into her beauty and self-care routine, influenced in part by her teenage daughter. \u201cHer skin-care routine is much more elaborate than mine is!\u201d Lakshmi admits. \u201cShe has introduced me to all kinds of things, like contouring and drawing freckles on the face with henna and letting that \u2018bake,\u2019 as she calls it. I don\u2019t do any of that.\u201d There\u2019s a sense of admiration in the contrast. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see her blossom into her own person. She\u2019s actually given me a facial before. She\u2019s a very good facialist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lakshmi\u2019s own rituals are rooted in heritage and memory, shaped by generations of Indian beauty traditions. \u201cWe have always had a lot of beauty rituals, especially as it relates to our hair,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe have been doing homemade recipes in my home for as long as I can remember.\u201d One ritual, in particular, remains vivid: \u201cAs a child, my grandmother would dry my hair as I lay with my head on her lap over hot coals that had dried roots smoking and burning\u2026the heat from the coals dries your hair, and then the smoke from that burning, fragrant root perfumes your hair. We were scrubbed, then massaged head to toe with heated oil. Then we were bathed, and a paste made from\u00a0Shikakai\u00a0powder was applied to our whole bodies. Let\u2019s just say I\u2019m very used to home rituals that are also self-care and beauty practices.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in New York, Lakshmi\u2019s daily rhythm is fluid, oscillating between quiet routine and full-throttle. \u201cThere is no typical day,\u201d she says. \u201cSome days I go to the gym, I\u2019m writing, or trying to write, or reading something that will hopefully spark a piece of writing.\u201d Other days unfold at a faster clip. \u201cToday, I was in the makeup chair at 7 a.m., we did three different interviews, one in Brooklyn, another in Midtown and a third one in the financial district.\u201d Even then, she remains grounded in small, familiar rituals\u2014figuring out dinner before her daughter gets home, carving out time to write or ending the day with friends.<\/p>\n

After a year defined by constant motion\u2014finishing and promoting a book, filming, editing and caring for her mother\u2014Lakshmi is ready for a different kind of luxury. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to getting some rest,\u201d she says. \u201cI literally don\u2019t have a next thing\u2026I\u2019m looking forward to having a spring and summer filled with pleasure, joy, rest and relaxation. Those are my next very important projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
