It’s a traditional laser used in a novel way—it doesn’t leave swelling, scabs, or sandpaper texture on the skin after treatment.”
Why is it considered safe for every skin tone, when other lasers aren’t?
The science comes down to wavelength. “The 1064nm Nd:YAG laser bypasses the epidermis at the skin’s surface due to its longer wavelength, and therefore doesn’t impact melanin,” Dr. Weiser explains. “That makes it safe for all skin types and skin tones.”
What actually happens during a first session?
It’s quicker and simpler than you might expect. “Patients recline comfortably with their eyes protected by metal shields,” says Dr. Weiser. “I use a micellar solution to clean the skin’s surface and remove any skincare products, sunscreen, or makeup. A full-face treatment takes only about 15 minutes, and the laser feels warm as it moves above the skin’s surface—at no point does the handpiece actually touch the skin.”

A few ground rules, to start: No self-tanner, no booking right after intense sun exposure or tanning, and it’s best to stay out of the sun after treatments in general. She also flags expectations early: “Laser Genesis requires a series of sessions spaced weeks apart for best results,” so patients should go in knowing this isn’t a one-and-done.
What’s recovery like, and when do results show up?
The after-effects are minor. “Immediately post-treatment, skin can be flushed, but this is typically very brief, often lasting minutes to hours,” says Dr. Weiser. She recommends spacing sessions two to four weeks apart. “Results are usually visible within the first three to four sessions, though some patients see early changes in as few as one to two.” Texture improvements take the longest to reveal themselves, so patience is key.

Credentials over convenience. “First-time laser patients should be very mindful of their provider’s credentials and experience,” Dr. Weiser advises. “Look for board-certified dermatology offices where providers have extensive training in laser physics. Make sure your provider is using all the correct safety precautions and can thoroughly and scientifically answer your questions before starting treatment.” Her bottom line: “Lasers are medical procedures that can deliver excellent results, but they also carry risks—so it’s crucial they’re done safely to minimize side effects and maximize benefits.”
