Why Dermatologists Say This Prescription Retinoid Is Having a Moment

Retinol has long been the anti-aging skin-care ingredient beauty editors and skin experts love to recommend, but a stronger, prescription-only cousin is quietly climbing the ranks of skin-care searches: tazarotene. Once known mostly as an acne and psoriasis treatment, tazarotene is now getting requested by name at dermatology offices. Here’s what two board-certified dermatologists want you to know about the ingredient before you ask your derm for a prescription.

Featured Experts

  • Anna Chacon, MD is a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami, FL
  • Dr. Kiran Mian is a board-certified dermatologist based in New York, NY

What Is Tazarotene?

Tazarotene is a prescription-strength topical retinoid derived from vitamin A, most commonly prescribed to treat acne and psoriasis. But according to Miami dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD, its benefits extend well beyond clearing breakouts and softening plaques. “It can also be helpful for photoaging, including fine lines, uneven texture, discoloration and other signs of sun damage,” Dr. Chacon says.

New York dermatologist Dr. Kiran Mian adds important context on where tazarotene sits within the broader retinoid family: “It’s stronger in class than tretinoin, and it targets receptors that are more specific to anti-aging benefits like collagen stimulation,” she says. “It is the last or strongest category when it comes to strength of retinoids.”

Tazarotene is available in a few different forms and strengths, which matters for anyone comparing notes with a derm: 0.05% and 0.1% gel or cream (the traditional formulations) Arazlo, a 0.045% lotion that Dr. Mian says is “very well tolerated by patients” Fabior, a 0.1% foam typically used for moderate to severe acne.

Tazarotene vs. Retinol: What’s the Real Difference?

If you’ve built a skin-care routine around over-the-counter retinol, it’s worth understanding why a dermatologist might reach for tazarotene instead. “Tazarotene is much more potent than over-the-counter retinol,” Dr. Chacon says. “Retinol has to go through several conversion steps in the skin before becoming active, whereas tazarotene works more directly through retinoid receptors.”

That direct mechanism is exactly why tazarotene tends to deliver more dramatic results, but it also comes with a trade-off. “Because of its potency, results can be more noticeable, but dryness, peeling and irritation can also be more common,” Dr. Chacon notes. Still, she points out that retinoids as a category remain some of the most well-studied topical ingredients for addressing signs of aging, so the extra strength comes backed by decades of research.

Why Is Tazarotene Trending Right Now?

Both dermatologists are seeing the ingredient come up more often in the exam room, and they’re crediting the same source: social media. “I’ve noticed more patients asking about prescription-strength skin care and stronger retinoids, particularly as people become more educated about active ingredients through social media,” Dr. Chacon says. “There is definitely more curiosity about how prescription retinoids compare to traditional retinol products.”

Dr. Mian is seeing an even more specific pattern play out with patients requesting Arazlo by name. “I have had a few patients come in asking specifically for Arazlo—someone must have mentioned it online,” she says.

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Use Tazarotene

Tazarotene isn’t automatically the right fit for every skin type or concern. “It can be a great option for patients with acne, sun damage or signs of aging who are able to tolerate a stronger retinoid,” Dr. Chacon says. But she recommends caution for certain skin types: “I would be more cautious in patients with very sensitive skin, eczema or a compromised skin barrier. It should also be avoided during pregnancy.”

Dr. Mian’s insight adds another practical takeaway for anyone nervous about tolerability: the Arazlo lotion formulation, at a lower 0.045% concentration, was specifically designed to be gentler and better tolerated than the traditional gel or cream, which may make it a reasonable entry point for those wary of a stronger retinoid.

As with any prescription treatment, a dermatologist can help determine the right strength, formulation and frequency based on skin type and goals.

What to Pair With Tazarotene (and What to Avoid)

Because tazarotene is potent, what you put around it in your routine matters as much as the ingredient itself. Dr. Chacon recommends building a supportive, barrier-focused routine: “I like pairing tazarotene with hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Daily sunscreen is also essential.”

On the flip side, she cautions against stacking too many active ingredients at once, especially early on. “I recommend being cautious with other potentially irritating actives, including exfoliating acids, physical scrubs and other retinoids, especially when someone is first starting tazarotene.”

The Bottom Line

Tazarotene isn’t a new ingredient, but it’s having a new moment, fueled by patients who are more ingredient-savvy than ever and social-media buzz around specific formulations like Arazlo. For those who can tolerate its strength, dermatologists say it remains one of the most effective topical options for acne, sun damage and visible signs of aging, as long as it’s paired with a barrier-supporting routine, daily SPF and realistic expectations about the adjustment period.

As always, a board-certified dermatologist can help determine whether it’s the right fit and which strength or formulation makes the most sense for individual skin needs.
